Sudden Opportunity Grants provide a quick way to make great projects happen. The grants are limited to $200 and must address a project or need that has come up suddenly for which you cannot plan. If approved, the money to support the project will be granted immediately. Sudden Opportunity funds are limited and may not be available for the entire school year. 21st Century Advantage Grant Program

The 21st Century Advantage Grant Program has long been the flagship of the SEF. Our faith in and support for the classroom teacher commits us to providing opportunities for them that not only enrich their students’ learning experiences but also inspire them to think creatively. Retaining our great teachers by supporting their work is important to the SEF.

The 21st Century Advantage Grant program supports creative and innovative projects. The Allocations Committee meets in March, and grant awards are announced in April for the next academic year. All materials purchased with Foundation funds remain in the district, allowing teachers to utilize them in their classrooms for years to come. SEF grants are made possible because of tax-deductible contributions.

Outside-the-Box Grant

The Outside-the-Box Grant rewards creativity aimed at expanding students’ understanding of their community and the world. An example of a funded grant is Jeff Platt’s South Middle “Five-Star Leaders: Crisis at Little Rock” grant. Every 8th-grade student studies materials provided by the Eisenhower Library that explore democratic leadership, constitutional concepts, and the process of consensus-based decision making. They then travel to the Library where they role-play historical figures, analyze school desegregation issues, and participate in a mock news conference.

The Allocations Committee meets in March, and grant awards are announced in April for the next academic year.

Joan Barhydt Special Education Grant

Joan Barhydt Special Education Grants provide funding to support programs serving children who receive special education services. Requests for funds may not exceed $1,000 and must address a project or need that will benefit students receiving special education services.

Building principals, special education administrators, teachers & staff may apply by completing the online application by the due date.
