

Grant Recipients
21st Century Advantage grants:
- Lisa Ochs, CKCIE: Physical therapist will utilize balance beams, rhythm sticks and tilt boards to help special ed preschool children develop gross motor skills.
- Jennifer Chlumsky, Coronado: elementary music students will have more drums in their classroom to increase the number of students who can participate
- Coronado, Stephanie Martin: K-5 students will experiment in science lab using compasses, thermometers, test tubes and microscopes
- Coronado, Becky Polzella: 4th graders will use the IXP math program, a computer based program that provides 22 categories and targets 203 different math skills
- Karla Nothern, Heusner: students will use a digital camera to document PRIDE Patrol (Heusner student leaders that are nominated by teachers) events
- Heusner, Amy Frost: Every Heusner student will plant one flower bulb at the school and monitor growth and changes in the flower
- Meadowlark, Cari Slothower: school's counselor will show short film clips that teach character education
- Meadowlark, Cheryl Ritter: First graders will increase reading fluency by timing themselves with basic one-minute timers while reading fluency phrases to partners
- Meadowlark, Marcie Wentzel: Kindergartners will complete 16 different activities during small group center time to increase phonemic awareness
- Meadowlark, Margy Hogarty: Third graders will "listen to read" with audio literature for individual listening centers
- Schilling, Mary Harmon: Schilling library will receive "Playaways," preloaded all-in one audio books for 3-5 grade students
- Schilling, Ben Schmidt: 5th graders will participate in Reader's Theatre which will increase fluency, pacing, intonation and expression
- Schilling, Preston McCorkle: 5th graders will use new CD-ROMs that target reading and math skills with their classroom interactive Promethean Boards
- Schilling, Nancy Bauer: Schilling students will become drummers in their music classroom!
- Schilling, Marlin Crosson: Schilling students will learn the importance of recycling discarded school paper products
- South Middle School, Marcia Troutfetter: Special needs students will use balance boards in physical education to increase coordination, eye tracking and concentration
- South High School, Tina Schaub: student readers and teacher books will support the South High Intensive Reading program which provides 80 minutes of individualized instruction per week for targeted students
- Stewart, Andria Lilley: Kindergarten students will benefit from the Bal-a-Vis-X program that increases hand-eye coordination, eye-tracking and concentration
- Sunset, Deb Christy: All elementary PE kids will learn how to bowl using the Bowler's Ed curriculum (Salina Regional Health Foundation grant)
- Gifted Facilitator, Kim Curtis: Coronado, Schilling and Sunset students will experiment with solar kit robots, air & water turbine engine kits and wind power kits to learn more about renewable energy sources
- English as Second Language, Lisa Hall: K-5th grade will design, model, problem-solve, and practice language skills using Bricklab Lego manipulatives (Earl Bane Foundation grant)
Outside-the-Box Grant Recipients for 2011-2012 include:
- South High, Lyric Cairns: students will design and build a remote-controlled robot that will complete assigned tasks and compete at Wichita State in the BEST Robotics competition (Philips grant)
- South High, Nikki Chamberlain: Philips Lighting will support "Lab Chicks", a program that uses high school mentors to encourage younger girls to engage in science and math (Philips grant)
- CKCIE, Ardis Bryan-Pritchett: Project Search of Salina, an internship program in collaboration with the Salina Regional Health Center, will receive cameras and printers to document task completion, proficiency, productivity and attendance
- Lakewood, Susan Coykendall: Lakewood students will learn how to build raised beds, cultivate and grow annual vegetables as well as perennial fruit trees in the Lakewood Garden Project.
- South Middle, Jeff Platt: 8th graders will immerse themselves in history through the Eisenhower Center's Five Star Leader Program, which examines President Eisenhower's response to segregation in the public schools in Little Rock, AR. (partially funded by Capitol Federal Savings)
- South Middle, Matt Gerry: music students will see music training in action by attending concerts at the Stiefel Theater with "Mr. G".
